Seasonal checklist for mane, tail and skin
A checklist makes horse care in the summer clear. Especially when you pay attention to the mane, tail, fur and skin, a steady round is nice.
This blog is intended as general care information. In case of open spots, pain, swelling, wetness or doubt: call your vet.
Daily check
- Mane comb: look for short hairs, dirt and rubbing.
- Tail set: check for friction and broken hairs.
- Belly line: pay attention to sensitivity and insect activity.
- Withers and chest: check pressure spots on blankets.
- Head and ears: look calmly, without hard brushing.
Keeping equipment clean
Brushes, blankets, halters and girths collect sweat, sand and dirt. Clean material makes brushing more pleasant and helps you see better what is changing.
Always check the fit of blankets. Pay attention to shoulders, chest, withers and tail flap. A blanket that chafes can put extra strain on the skin.
Keeping care calm
When you have a lot of urge to brush, it is tempting to brush extra hard. Working quietly is usually better. Use gentle movements, avoid open skin and do not constantly change products or routines.
When to pay extra attention?
- If your horse suddenly rubs a lot.
- If there are open or wet spots.
- If the horse reacts clearly irritated or painful.
- If you're not sure if it's sweet itch or something else.
A clear checklist does not provide a medical assessment, but it does provide guidance. You can see more quickly what is normal for your horse and when something is different.
